adidas Adistar Control 3

Are you looking for sneakers that evoke the running design of the turn of the millennium while being suitable for everyday wear in the city? The Adistar Control 3 model from adidas Originals brings the layered aesthetic of retro running shoes into the contemporary wardrobe. With its colorful design, it makes a bold statement while easily coordinating with other pieces of your outfit.

The upper combines textile with synthetic overlays, giving the shoe a structured, technical appearance while keeping the foot secure. The midsole features the integrated Torsion System, a support that adidas has utilized since the late 1980s. It helps stabilize the foot with every step. The rubber outsole provides reliable grip on urban surfaces. The low cut leaves the ankle free, allowing you to pair the sneakers with straight jeans, cargo pants, or a tracksuit. The adidas brand hails from Herzogenaurach in Bavaria, founded by Adolf "Adi" Dassler. The adidas Originals line focuses on archival silhouettes and their new interpretations.

Retro Stability in a New Lifestyle Coat - adidas Adistar Control 3

adidas Adistar Control 3 is primarily a lifestyle silhouette today – a shoe that draws from adidas' pure performance running history, yet functions as an everyday retro sneaker with technical DNA in the background.

History: Roots Dating Back to 1976

The Adistar line first appeared on the track in 1976 with the Adistar 2000 model, then as a racing spike focused on precision. In the early 2000s, adidas revisited the name and divided the line into three branches based on purpose: Cushion (softer landing), Ride (balanced daily miles), and Control (stability and structure against overpronation). The last category included the Control 3, which followed the model from 2005.

The entire Adistar Control family has experienced a significant comeback in recent years as a lifestyle silhouette: in 2025, the related model Control 5 (originally from 2008) returned, among others in collaborations with Larry June and Unheardof, and the line continues with the upcoming Adistar Molded model, planned for May 2026.

Return of Legendary Technologies: ForMotion, adiprene, and Torsion System

What makes the Adistar Control 3 such an exceptional shoe for all-day wear is the preservation of original technological elements that were at the absolute peak of performance running in the 2000s:

  • ForMotion Technology: An independently moving heel segment, separated from the rest of the shoe by a sliding plate that absorbs impact in three directions and mechanically adapts to the surface and your stride. In an urban environment, this means a smooth and stable landing on any sidewalk.
  • adiprene and adiprene+ Cushioning: An elastic foam material under the heel absorbs impact force upon landing, while the more responsive adiprene+ in the forefoot supports the push-off into the next step.
  • Torsion System: A thermoplastic stabilizing element bridging the forefoot and heel in the midsole – allowing them to move independently and protecting the arch from unnatural twisting during the foot roll.

Design

The upper is made of breathable mesh material complemented by reflective details and structural elements against pronation, which in today's lifestyle version serve more as a striking retro design than as an active performance feature.

Who the Model is Intended For

The Adistar Control 3 is for you if you appreciate retro running silhouettes of the 2000s translated into contemporary street style – thus, it is more suited for enthusiasts of "dad shoes" / running-revival aesthetics and archival shapes of adidas, rather than for active runners.

Materials

UpperTextileTextileTextile uppers are a lightweight and highly breathable upper construction solution that uses woven or knitted structures of natural and synthetic fibres. This type of upper is valued in the footwear industry for its extraordinary ability to adapt to the shape of the foot, minimising the formation of blisters and ensuring high user comfort. Thanks to the porous structure of the material, textile uppers allow for efficient heat and moisture dissipation, which is crucial for maintaining an optimal microclimate even under increased physical stress. In addition, modern textile processing technologies allow reinforcement zones to be integrated directly into the knit, achieving an ideal balance between stability and flexibility. / SyntheticsSyntheticsThe material of the upper includes a wide range of man-made fibres and laminates that are designed to overcome the limits of natural materials. The main advantages are low weight, high strength and fast drying ability. Modern synthetic materials are often developed with an emphasis on breathability and resistance to external influences such as moisture or mechanical damage. Thanks to their technological variability, they allow the production of specific textures and structures that provide the foot with the necessary support and flexibility while maintaining easy maintenance.
Midsoleadidas Torsion® Systemadidas Torsion® SystemA technology designed for foot stability that allows natural torsional movement between the forefoot and rearfoot. A lightweight torsion element is placed in the sole to support the midfoot, improving motion control and increasing safety with every step. This allows the shoe to remain flexible yet stable, making it ideal for running and dynamic sporting activities.
SoleRubberRubberIt is one of the most widely used materials for the production of soles due to its high mechanical resistance and durability. The main advantage of rubber soles is their excellent grip (traction) on different types of surfaces, which minimises the risk of slipping. The material is naturally flexible, waterproof and effectively absorbs shocks during walking. Depending on the compound, the rubber can be either soft for better contact with the ground or hard for maximum abrasion resistance on rough terrain.
