New Balance 2002
From Overlooked Running Peak to Icon of Modern Streetwear - New Balance 2002R
The New Balance 2002R sneakers are a shining example of how technical athletic footwear can transform into a global fashion phenomenon. When this silhouette first debuted in 2010 (then without the letter "R" in its name) as a direct successor to the technological model 2001, it became a symbol of luxurious running engineering. The original version was produced in the USA from the finest materials, and its price point was so high that it remained nearly inaccessible to everyday customers. The true breakthrough and worldwide fame came a decade later with the rise of the massive trend of dad shoes and Y2K aesthetics.
The History of the Model and the Transformation with the Letter "R"
The original sales from 2010 did not reflect the future glory of the shoe, but New Balance gave this gem a second chance. In 2020, the model returned to the scene under the guidance of the creative director of the Japanese division, NB Japan, Tetsuy Shono, who completely redefined the silhouette.
The addition of the letter “R” (Redevelopment) to the model designation 2002 symbolizes its transformation from purely performance running shoes to lifestyle sneakers. Production shifted from the USA to Asia, allowing for a reduction in price to an accessible level without compromising the shoe's premium character. Shono managed to transform the original American technical aesthetic into a contemporary urban trend that defines modern city style.
Premium Materials and Cutting-Edge Cushioning Technologies
What makes the New Balance 2002R one of the most comfortable sneakers on the market is its thoughtful hybrid construction of the midsole and precise material architecture:
- Upper of the shoe: Perfectly breathable base made of technical mesh, covered with panels of nubuck, high-quality suede, and synthetic overlays for maximum strength and 3D structure.
- N-ergy® cushioning: Advanced gel component and cushioning system in the midsole, which excels in high elasticity and reliably absorbs impacts with every step on hard urban asphalt.
- ABZORB® technology: Special foam reinforcement under the heel and midfoot, combining cushioning with uncompromising compression resistance.
- Stability Web® arch support: Lightweight stabilizing element under the arch that prevents twisting of the shoe and ensures a smooth transition from heel to toe.
How to Style New Balance 2002R in a Modern Wardrobe?
With its sportier yet refined vintage look, the lifestyle sneakers New Balance 2002R are an extremely versatile piece for everyday wear.
They work perfectly in a relaxed athleisure style paired with heavy cotton sweatpants and an oversized hoodie. If you prefer clean urban minimalism, combine them with straight raw denim, a basic t-shirt, and a lightweight trench coat. They also pair wonderfully with technical materials and cargo pants within the gorpcore aesthetic. Indulge in the feeling of absolute comfort and conquer the urban sidewalks with a model that combines the best of running history and contemporary streetwear.

The Icon of Streetwear and Comfort Defining Urban Style - New Balance
If you seek the perfect balance between maximum comfort and uncompromising style, the brand New Balance is an absolute match for you. What began as a modest idea in Boston has transformed over the decades into one of the most sought-after lifestyle and streetwear brands in the world. At Queens, we offer you the freshest selection of sneakers and apparel that are currently shaping the fashion landscape.
Whether you are hunting for timeless classics, highly coveted retro running silhouettes, or the latest limited collaborations, New Balance in our portfolio represents the pinnacle of urban culture.
From Orthopedic Inserts to the Absolute King of the Sneaker Community
The brand's history began in 1906 under the name New Balance Arch Support Company. Founder William J. Riley was inspired by the perfect balance of chicken feet and designed a revolutionary flexible arch and orthopedic inserts. This deep emphasis on anatomical ergonomics and technical innovations (such as mixed gel inserts) remains in the brand's DNA to this day. New Balance also became a pioneer by being one of the few manufacturers to offer and still offers various widths of footwear for a perfectly fitting cut.
Over the years, however, what started as purely functional sports footwear has become a street phenomenon. The brand achieved the impossible: it connected the world of elite athletes, subcultural communities, hip-hop enthusiasts, and fashion purists. Today, New Balance is no longer just "dad's garden shoes" (although the brand itself has masterfully defined the aesthetic of dad shoes). It is a status symbol of modern streetwear.
Premium Quality: A Legend Named "Made in"
What elevates New Balance to an entirely different level compared to its competitors is their uncompromising commitment to premium craftsmanship. The New Balance Made in USA and Made in UK lines are synonymous with luxury in the sneaker world. While most global production has moved to Asia, these specific collections are still manufactured in factories in New England (USA) and Flimby (UK).
When purchasing models from these lines, you acquire a product with a high degree of handcrafting, made from the finest leather, premium suede, and breathable mesh. For collectors and sneaker enthusiasts at Queens, models from the Made in division are the absolute holy grail, maturing like fine wine with age and wear.
